WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has issued a new compliance directive for occupational exposure to hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). The directive, OSHA Instruction CPL 02-02-074, Inspection Procedures for the Chromium (VI) Standards, was effective January 24, 2008. WASHINGTON -- OSHA today announced a new National Emphasis Program (NEP) to target worksites where employees are at risk for developing silicosis. The NEP compliance directive includes an updated list of industries commonly known to have overexposures to silica; detailed information on potential hazards linked to silica and about current research regarding silica exposure hazards; guidance on calculating the Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs) for dust containing respirable crystalline silica in the construction and maritime industries; and guidance on conducting silica-related inspections. The Californian government’s inadequate oversight of hazardous chemicals is sickening thousands of workers and children each year and costs the state an estimated $2.6 billion in medical expenses and lost wages, according to a report released by researchers at the University of California. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health is making available a poster that provides helpful tips on protecting workers from the hazards of isocynate exposure during spray-on truck bedliner applications. The poster reminds workers of appropriate personal protective equipment during such work and the importance of washing the hands and face afterward. [Click For More]

BRAINTREE, Mass. -- Mantrose-Haeuser Co. Inc., an Attleboro, Mass., manufacturer of industrial and pharmaceutical food coatings, faces $192,000 in proposed fines from OSHA for violations including unlabeled containers of chemicals; unapproved containers for flammable liquid; and lack of written procedures, training and other elements of the plant's process safety management program. The very chemicals used to keep hospitals squeaky clean and to treat patients could be harmful to nurses who are exposed to them in their daily duties according to a study released Tuesday. The survey looked at nurses' exposure to 11 common health care chemicals, including gases used for anesthesia; hand disinfectants; cleaning agents; latex; medications such as chemotherapy and antiretroviral drugs; devices containing mercury; personal care products such as shampoo and soap; and chemicals used for sterilization. TAMPA, Fla. -- Wheelblast Inc. is facing $139,500 in proposed penalties following an inspection by OSHA. The agency has proposed $109,500 in penalties for 12 serious and three willful safety violations, including the transfer of chemicals in an unsafe manner, allowing an accumulation of flammable disposable materials and not adequately preventing the ignition of flammable vapors during the manufacturing process. Employees also were found to be exposed to fall hazards, electrical hazards and amputation hazards. [Click For More]

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Responding to employee complaints, the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) found employees of a Rochester, N.Y., contractor exposed to asbestos hazards while performing demolition work at the Old Genesee Hospital in Rochester. As a result, the employer, Gordon-Smith Contracting Inc., was cited for 10 alleged willful and serious violations of OSHA asbestos and respiratory protection standards and faces a total of $99,925 in proposed fines. BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Inspectors with the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have identified 21 safety violations at Tubular Products Co.'s steel tubing manufacturing facility in Birmingham. OSHA is proposing $44,450 for 20 serious safety violations, including failure to properly label and identify chemicals used in the workplace. [Click For More]
